Boyne Lodge Personal Care Home

Location
Carman, MB
Size
9,300 m2 / 100,000 ft2

After recognizing the need for seniors housing in Carman, MB, and the surrounding areas, the Boyne Valley Hostel Corporation established Boyne Lodge as a 45-bed hostel and 25-bed personal care home in 1967.
Once the Government of Manitoba formed its Regional Health Authorities (RHAs) in 1997, the facility transferred from an independent entity to an RHA facility. Since then, Boyne Lodge has operated under the Southern Health-Santé Sud Health Authority.

Following a review in 2016, Southern Health–Santé Sud officials determined adding more personal care home spaces in Carman would help respond to the long-term growth of seniors living in the area. The surrounding communities supported this plan, creating the community non-profit corporation Boyne Care Holdings to begin the planning process. They engaged ft3 and Graham Construction to provide best practice design for 80 residents in the new facility. Physically linked to Boyne Towers, a four-storey independent seniors housing complex, Boyne Lodge had to remain operational during construction. This RFP outlines the future assisted living facility planned for the campus.

The redesign included renovations to the existing Boyne Lodge to accommodate support services, leased office space, and 26 renovated long-term care beds based on the Small House concept, a 2018 Design Guide for Long-term Care and B3 Manitoba Building Code classification. This concept facilitates a resident-first decision-making process, creating an age-in-place campus that allows on-site health services and social connections like a bistro-style restaurant and lounge to connect residents with the surrounding community.
