The South Parking Lot at the Grace Hospital required expanding and reconfiguring to improve wayfinding and safety for staff, patients, and visitors. Our team reviewed the existing site's layout extensively and reconfigured it to cater to the new parking area to the south, adding 160 new stalls.

The design accomplished this by shuffling over the existing parking stalls to allow a clearer wayfinding treatment and more defined pedestrian corridors, including a landscaping treatment to guide all users to the hospital’s entry points.  We addressed accessibility early in the schematic design stages, responding to a broad range of mobility and physical impairments and paying attention to various details, such as access to parking, approach and exterior entrances, wayfinding and signage, seating rest stops, and ramps.

This project won the Outdoor Award at the 2014 Winnipeg Access Awards for Excellence in Universal Design and Accessibility, Physical Access Renovation, exceeding the Manitoba Building Code standards for accessibility by integrating accessibility and Universal Design features gracefully and seamlessly within the overall project design.
