ft3 was engaged to deliver architecture, landscape, and interior design services for the new Dauphin Regional Health Centre Emergency Department / Special Care Unit Redevelopment. Located within a residential neighborhood and bounded by the Vermillion River, a PCH, medical clinic, the community health services building, and single family homes, the new ED includes: an enclosed ambulance garage; decontamination, trauma / resuscitation, exam, treatment, triage, waiting, observation, supply / utility rooms, and special care and support functions. All current services have been incorporated within an efficient footprint. The layout of the unit itself mimics an ICU environment with exam, observation, and trauma bays fanned around the central nurses' desk. Key aspects of the design concept, as identified by staff, respond to the need for a welcoming, inviting, accessible, approachable, secure, spatially and operationally efficient and fluid facility. A four bay, enclosed EMS ambulance drop off is a significant addition to the hospital.

The design is based on proven operational planning criteria and Lean thinking. A long-term master-planning objective was the mindset for future additions, overall access, and way-finding. Standards for health care design such as CSA Z8000-11 and infection control were adhered to. In addition, this project has been designed to achieve Green Globes New Construction Canada v2 certification which it achieved in November 2020 at the 3 Globes level. A Quantity Surveyor provided cost estimates throughout the process. To ensure uninterrupted ED services throughout the course of construction, a temporary ED was constructed within a main floor administration department.

The new Emergency Department was awarded a rating of Three Globes under the Green Globes New Construction v2 Certification building performance assessment certification process on Nov. 24, 2020.
