The Section of Nephrology, in consultation with the University of Manitoba’s Department of Internal Medicine and the Manitoba Renal Program, sought to expand and enhance their research activities by establishing a research centre focused on kidney health and personal medicine at Seven Oaks General Hospital (SOGH).

Working with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, SOGH retained ft3 to develop a functional space analysis and plan, coordinate, and procure new furniture and equipment, including a kitchenette, to realize the new Chronic Disease Innovation Centre.

The Section of Nephrology staff, including the University of Manitoba's students, operated from a temporarily converted auditorium. We worked within the constraints of this space's high ceiling volume (approximately 20 feet above the finished floor) to accommodate private and shared collaborative teaming areas.

Finally, during a design workshop, the client wished to infuse playfulness into the space. A swing appears in the new centre, allowing researchers and students to experience the benefits of play while conducting essential research in chronic diseases.
