Boundary Trails Health Centre
Since 2001, the City of Winkler and its catchment area have experienced considerable population growth, including an aging population that requires a wider range of healthcare services from Boundary Trails Health Centre (BTHC).
ft3, A49, and Huddy Healthcare Solutions completed a pre-design report in 2021 to expand BTHC’s building footprint and advance major renovations that will accommodate new and expanded program areas, comply with current codes and standards, and meet patient and staff requirements.
The report also recommended that the redevelopment of the health centre include a new Energy Centre, alongside renovations to the facility’s existing areas, and two two-storey additions. These additions would implement a 24-bed Inpatient Unit, a Nursery, and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, as well as a Community Services Building with outpatient rehabilitation facilities.
Drawing from this report, the design concept focused on interventions such as natural light and views, community connections, and the movement of people to inform interior and exterior spaces, including the building’s façade.
The interior concept locates open workstations along the exterior wall to allow an abundance of light into the building while providing essential views of the landscaped courtyard. Outside, the exterior features a new patio area and open space that is primed for activity, encouraging staff, patients and visitors to socialize, celebrate, and rest, as needed.
