Marpeck Commons
After working with the Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) to realize Concord Hall (a three-storey student residence) on campus, the university retained ft3 to develop a new learning commons.
The Marpeck Commons, Library, and Bridge feature a variety of student gathering spaces that encourage interaction, such as a coffee bar and bookstore. The library anchors the new facility to the site, connecting the southern edge — of what will become a feature campus quadrangle — with expansive views leading to the CMU heritage building.
The new bridge serves as a gateway across Grant Avenue, a major road that divides the campus, uniting each side and helping ensure that staff, students, and visitors have safe, easy, and barrier-free access to all facilities.
Meanwhile, the exterior evokes a place of contemplation and relaxation, presenting a simple palette of vegetation skirting the foundation walls and contrasting against the library's Tyndall stone and glass structure. A large pond enclosed by walkways and prairie grasses add further depth to the campus’ landscape.
The Marpeck Commons, Library, and Bridge form a focal point regarding all aspects of university life. When circulating through old and new, past and present, and knowledge and discovery, intellectual, social, and spiritual renewal permeate throughout, connecting structures, students, and staff and linking them to their history.
